About

This is the journal of the Sussex Centre for International Education (CIE). Education and development in the Global South is the main focus of CIE. Our aim is to undertake research and provide a knowledge hub, insights and findings related to the concerns of lower income countries in different parts of the world seeking to enhance their development. Over the last 20 years, CIE has grown to become one of the largest and most highly rated academic groups of its kind in the UK, with a reputation as a leader in its fields of study and as a centre of excellence.

The journal publishes the best dissertations from the Masters in International Education and Development. The MA in International Education and Development (MAIED) has established its reputation over the last three decades and is highly regarded internationally. The MAIED offers structured study at masters level for one year (or two years part time) at the University of Sussex campus. Building on the internationally diverse experience of the teaching faculty and other students of the Centre for International Education, the course links theory with research, policy and practice, and critically engages with the educational challenges of low- and middle-income countries. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach to analyse the complex educational issues of resource-constrained and/or rapidly expanding educational systems.

All MAIED students do a dissertation as part of their studies. These are 15,000 word essays which follow one of three types: empirical pieces of research, desk based studies and ‘interventions’. There are two criteria for publishing dissertations in this journal:

1. The author of the dissertation has given their permission to publish the dissertation.

2. The dissertation was awarded a distinction by the examiners. A distinction is the best mark available and is awarded to assignments with a mark of between 70-100%.

Students submitting their work to the journal have passed these criteria and stated that the work is their own and does not contain plagiarism.

The dissertations are published and free to access here under a Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 3.0 Unported Licence (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0). This means that readers are to free to Share, copy, distribute and transmit them under the following conditions:
